Description
This is raw-format quartz — stock cut to a block, cube, or cast as an ingot/boule, intended as the starting material for further machining or for cutting into optical blanks. The purchasing decision is bulk dimension and material grade, not a finished part geometry.
Dimensions
| Format | Specification |
|---|---|
| Block / Cube | L × W × H per drawing |
| Ingot (Cast / Cylindrical) | Diameter and height per drawing; large-format boules up to ~365 kg cited for synthetic quartz |
| Ingot Diameter Range | Ø3 mm to ~100 mm for small-format synthetic boules; larger cylindrical ingots to several hundred mm for optical-grade cutting stock |
Production Method
| Method | Detail |
|---|---|
| Flame Melting (Natural Raw Material) | Continuous flame melting of purified natural quartz sand produces net-formed ingots with few micro-bubbles and high material utilization. |
| Boule Forming (Synthetic) | High-temperature fusion, then mechanically and fire-polished to clarity. |
| Cutting to Block / Cube | Ingot or boule material cut down to specific L × W × H for downstream processing into plates, discs, or optical parts. |
Surface Condition
| Condition | Clear Aperture | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Raw Formed | ~80% | Wider dimensional tolerance, as-formed from the melting/casting process |
| Ground Surface | ~90% | Tighter tolerance, surface prepared for further optical processing |
Material Grades
Blocks, cubes and ingots are available in the same grade system as finished optical parts. See Optical Quartz Blanks and the Quartz Glass Tubes Material Grades table for the full Type I–IV / JGS1–3 comparison. Bubble density is specified per 100 cm³ for optical-grade ingots, with bubble-free material available for critical optical use.
Application
- Raw stock for CNC machining into custom quartz components.
- Starting material for cutting optical windows, plates, and discs to size.
- Semiconductor process material such as sputtering targets, coating rings, and flanges cut from quartz ingot.
What to Specify
| Parameter | Quotation Input |
|---|---|
| Format | Block, cube, cylindrical ingot or boule stock |
| Dimensions | L × W × H, or diameter × height |
| Material Grade | JGS / Type grade or required optical/thermal performance |
| Surface Condition | Raw formed, sawn, ground, or prepared for optical finishing |
| Optical Quality | Bubble/inclusion requirement and clear-aperture requirement where applicable |
FAQ
What’s the difference between raw-formed and ground-surface ingot?
Raw-formed comes straight from the melting/casting process with a wider tolerance and ~80% clear aperture; ground-surface has been prepared to a tighter tolerance with ~90% clear aperture, ready for further optical processing.
Can I order a block cut to my exact machining stock size?
Yes — specify L × W × H per your drawing; blocks and cubes are cut from ingot/boule stock to your dimension.
Do you supply bubble-free material for optical use?
Yes — bubble density is specified per 100 cm³; confirm your optical clarity requirement and we’ll match the appropriate grade.
