Square / Hexagonal / Shaped Quartz Rods

Description

Square, hexagonal and shaped quartz rods use flat-faceted cross-sections instead of the circular section of standard fused quartz rod. This page covers straight profile stock where the purchasing dimensions are the side length, across-flats size or other defined cross-section dimensions together with finished length.

Half-round profiles are covered separately because they are defined by width, height and radius. Bent, redrawn and thin rods are also separated because their primary manufacturing parameter is the formed or reduced geometry rather than a straight faceted section.

Dimensions

Profile Cross-Section Range Length Tolerance
Square Side 1–100 mm 10–1200 mm standard; longer on request ±0.05–0.10 mm
Hexagonal Across-flats 1–100 mm 10–1200 mm standard; longer on request ±0.05–0.10 mm
Other Custom Profile Cross-section defined by drawing Length defined by part geometry Confirmed against profile geometry
Profile definition: for square stock, specify side length. For hexagonal stock, specify across-flats dimension. For other profiles, provide the full cross-section dimensions and corner / radius requirements.

Material

Property Specification
Standard Material Clear fused quartz
Optional Material Opaque quartz where the application requires a non-transparent quartz grade
Softening Point ~1730°C
Continuous Working Temperature 1100–1250°C
Short-Term Temperature Up to 1450°C, subject to profile geometry and operating condition

Quartz grade selection can follow the same fused-quartz material family used for other rod and tube stock. Where a specific optical, OH or impurity requirement applies, the grade should be stated separately from the profile dimensions.

Square Rod

Square quartz rod provides flat sides on all four faces. The section sits flush against flat mounting surfaces, does not roll during handling, and provides four repeatable datum faces for fixturing or secondary machining.

Design Feature Why It Is Used
Four flat faces Stable mounting against a flat surface
Non-rolling profile More predictable handling and fixture location than round rod
Defined corners Useful where orientation of the rod relative to a fixture matters

Hexagonal Rod

Hexagonal quartz rod adds more facets and corners than round or square stock. The profile gives positive hand or fixture engagement while retaining a relatively compact section around the center axis.

It is commonly selected where better grip is useful during handling, mixing or stirring, and can also be used as straight profile stock before further end forming or machining.

Other Shaped Quartz Rods

Custom straight profiles can be produced where the section cannot be represented by standard round, half-round, square or hexagonal stock. Typical quotation data includes the complete profile outline, overall width and height, individual facet dimensions, corner radii and finished length.

This page is for straight profile stock. For profiles that are subsequently bent, thermally reshaped or redrawn to a reduced section, see Bent / Redrawn / Thin Quartz Rods.

FAQ

What is the difference between this page and Quartz Stirring Rods?

This page covers the rod cross-section itself — square, hexagonal or other straight faceted bar stock. Quartz Stirring Rods covers the finished laboratory tool, including working length and end geometry for chemical or thermal mixing use. A stirring rod can be made from hexagonal stock, but the finished-tool requirements are different from profile-stock requirements.

Can you cut custom polygon cross-sections beyond square and hexagonal?

Yes. Provide the required cross-section dimensions, facet layout, corner radii and length so the profile can be checked for manufacturability.
