Fused quartz rods are solid stock for high-temperature supports, electrical insulation, precision fixtures, optical components and further quartz fabrication. We supply round rods in typical diameters of Ø2–50 mm and finished lengths of 100–1500 mm, with as-drawn, ground or polished surfaces.
Rods can be supplied as production stock, cut blanks or finished components. Diameter grinding improves mechanical fit, cylindrical polishing creates a controlled optical or clean surface, and secondary processing adds flats, grooves, reduced ends and formed features.
Available Fused Quartz Rod Products
As-Drawn Round Rod
Solid rod with the original smooth drawing surface. It is the economical starting form for supports, spacers, insulation parts and later flame working.
- Full-length stock
- Cut blanks
- Fire-finished ends
Diameter-Ground Rod
The outside diameter is ground where the rod must locate inside a bore, guide a moving assembly or maintain a controlled mechanical clearance.
- Full-length grinding
- Local fit diameter
- Reduced sections
Polished Quartz Rod
Local or complete cylindrical polishing is available for light transmission, visual inspection, low-scatter surfaces and clean instrument components.
- Local polish
- Full cylindrical polish
- Polished end faces
Finished Rod Components
Plain rod stock can be converted into a ready-to-install part with controlled ends and secondary mechanical or hot-formed features.
- Flats and grooves
- Cross-holes
- Tapers
- Formed or joined ends
Rod Manufacturing Capabilities
The manufacturing route changes with the required surface and final function. These capabilities can be combined on one rod rather than ordered as separate operations.
Continuous Drawing
Molten quartz is drawn into solid round stock with a smooth fire-finished cylindrical surface. Drawing provides repeatable production lengths for later cutting or hot working.
- Round solid sections
- Stable batch supply
- As-drawn surface
Diameter Grinding
Centerless or cylindrical grinding removes the as-drawn diameter variation and creates a controlled mechanical surface over the complete rod or a selected axial zone.
- Fit diameters
- Reduced mounting areas
- Ground matte surface
Cutting & End Finishing
Rods are cut to finished length and supplied with cut, ground-square, fire-polished or polished ends. The two ends can use different treatments.
- Matched cut lengths
- Square ground ends
- Fire or optical finish
Secondary Fabrication
Grinding, drilling and flame working add functional geometry without changing the entire rod into a custom profile.
- Flats and grooves
- Cross or axial holes
- Tapers, bends and quartz joins
Surface Finish Comparison
| Rod finish | Main advantage | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| As-drawn | Smooth fire-finished surface with minimum secondary processing | Supports, insulation, general fixtures and hot-work blanks |
| Diameter-ground | Improved mechanical size control and fit | Locating rods, precision supports and mating assemblies |
| Locally polished | Controlled clear surface only where it is functional | Inspection zones, optical interfaces and sensor assemblies |
| Fully polished | Clear cylindrical surface along the rod | Light transfer, optical instruments and visible process components |
Finished Features and End Options
Cut ends suit further fabrication. Ground-square ends create a stable mechanical datum, fire-polished ends remove the sharp cut edge, and optically polished ends support light coupling or inspection. Flats, grooves and reduced diameters can be placed locally without processing the complete rod surface.
Applications
High-Temperature Supports
Solid locating and spacing members for furnaces, heaters and thermal equipment.
Electrical Insulation
Quartz support rods and standoffs for equipment requiring heat resistance and low electrical loss.
Quartz Fabrication
Starting stock for laboratory ware, lamp parts, holders and custom hot-worked components.
Optical & Sensor Parts
Polished rods used for light transfer, inspection and rigid instrument assemblies.
Custom Fused Quartz Rods
Rods are available as stock lengths, cut blanks or finished parts with ground, polished and formed features.
Grade-Qualified Material Purity
Electric-fused / flame-fused quartz: SiO₂ ≥99.99%; synthetic JGS1-grade fused silica: ≥99.999%. Grade and lot certificate govern supplied material.
Transparent Drawn-Rod Diameter Tolerances
| Diameter band D (mm) | Diameter tolerance (mm) | Max ovality (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 2 < D ≤5 | ±0.15 | ≤0.15 |
| 5 < D ≤6 | ±0.20 | ≤0.20 |
| 6 < D ≤8 | ±0.20 | ≤0.20 |
| 8 < D ≤10 | ±0.20 | ≤0.20 |
| 10 < D ≤12 | ±0.30 | ≤0.30 |
| 12 < D ≤15 | ±0.30 | ≤0.30 |
| 15 < D ≤18 | ±0.30 | ≤0.30 |
| 18 < D ≤20 | ±0.40 | ≤0.30 |
| 20 < D ≤25 | ±0.50 | ≤0.40 |
| 25 < D ≤30 | ±0.50 | ≤0.40 |
| 30 < D ≤40 | ±0.60 | ≤0.50 |
| 40 < D ≤50 | ±0.70 | ≤0.60 |
These values apply to formed transparent rod stock. Diameter-ground precision rods use a separately agreed finished diameter; tighter stock tolerances can be quoted by order.
