Square, rectangular and triangular-bore quartz capillaries provide a shaped passage for non-round inserts, specialty fibers and defined flow cross-sections. Specify the internal profile and its orientation within the outside mounting envelope, rather than using the shape name as the complete geometry.
Why Use a Non-Round Bore
A square or triangular passage can help index a matching element when the mating geometry and clearance are designed for that function. A rectangular passage controls width and height independently for ribbon-like elements or a required flow section. State the actual insert profile, assembly clearance and orientation requirement; a shaped bore does not automatically eliminate rotation or play.
Corner Radius and Minimum Wall
Inside corners have a finite radius, which affects whether an insert can seat fully and how much quartz remains at the thinnest section. Define corner radii alongside bore width, height or side dimensions, and show the minimum wall relative to the outer profile. Review the largest internal envelope and the closest outer surface together rather than assuming a sharp-cornered ideal shape.
Bore Clocking and Orientation Control
Bore size, bore position and rotational orientation are separate controls. Use an end-view drawing with an outer datum, a reference side or an orientation mark where clocking matters. A round OD can simplify mounting, but it needs an indexing feature or mark if the assembly must preserve the internal profile’s direction. Specify the working length and finished ends so the shaped channel can be inspected and assembled consistently.
Dimension the Passage from a Cross-Section Datum
| Controlled Feature | Reference Capability / Requirement |
|---|---|
| Bore Shape | Square / rectangular / triangular / drawing-specific |
| Bore Width / Height | Square-bore side 0.1–5 mm reference range |
| Side Tolerance | Reference ±0.02–0.05 mmFinal tolerance depends on size, corner definition and finished length |
| Corner Radius | Inside radius specified where it controls element fit or flow |
| Outer Profile | Round, square or custom outside envelope |
| Bore Position | Located from outer datums; add an orientation mark where clocking matters |
| Wall / Web | Minimum quartz section identified at corners and closest outer surfaces |
| Length / Ends | Cut length with the shaped passage open at both faces |
Choose a Shape That Controls Orientation or Flow
| Bore | Functional Advantage | Drawing Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Square | Prevents rotation and locates square fibers or inserts | Side size, corner radius and clocking |
| Rectangular | Separates width and height for ribbon-like elements or flow paths | Width, height and orientation |
| Triangular | Indexes a three-sided element or creates a defined microstructure | Side lengths, corner radii and reference face |
| Custom shaped bore | Integrates a special alignment or flow cross-section | Fully dimensioned profile and minimum wall |
