Inquiry

Shaped and redrawn quartz rods provide a non-round cross-section along the complete part or over a selected functional area. Typical profile envelopes are 2–50 mm with finished lengths of 50–1500 mm. Available forms include D-shaped, square, rectangular, triangular, semicircular, multi-flat and grooved profiles.

Continuous redrawing is used when the same geometry runs along the length. Local grinding and machining add short flats, grooves and steps, while flame forming creates tapers and transitions. These routes can be combined to reduce separate fixtures and assembly components.

Available Quartz Profile Shapes

Flat and D-Shaped Rods

One flat creates a stable locating face while retaining most of the strength and handling behavior of round rod.

  • Single flat
  • Opposed flats
  • D-profile
  • Multi-flat section

Polygonal Profiles

Square, rectangular, triangular and customer-defined polygonal sections fit keyed holders and compact assemblies.

  • Square
  • Rectangular
  • Triangular
  • Custom polygon

Semicircular and Segment Rods

Half-round and segment profiles combine a curved optical or thermal surface with a flat assembly interface.

  • Semicircle
  • Circular segment
  • Flat-back profile

Grooved and Channel Profiles

Longitudinal channels guide fibers, wires, tubes or mating quartz pieces without attaching a separate guide.

  • V-groove
  • U-groove
  • Open channel
  • Multiple grooves

Tapered and Stepped Profiles

A shaped body can transition to a reduced, round or differently oriented end for coupling and mounting.

  • End taper
  • Reduced section
  • Mounting shoulder
  • Round-to-profile transition

Locally Machined Profiles

Short flats, notches and grooves are added only where required, leaving the remaining rod round and as-drawn.

  • Local flat
  • Positioning notch
  • Short groove
  • End key

Quartz Profile Manufacturing Capabilities

Three manufacturing routes cover most custom rod profiles. The route is selected by whether the feature is continuous, local or thermally formed.

Continuous Profile Redrawing

Round quartz stock is heated and redrawn through controlled tooling so the shaped cross-section continues along the production length.

  • D, square and rectangular sections
  • Polygonal and semicircular profiles
  • Longitudinal channels and grooves
Best for: repeated geometry along the complete length

Local Grinding and Machining

Material is removed only in the functional zone, allowing a round or shaped rod to receive a short flat, notch, step or locating groove.

  • Local flats and grooves
  • Reduced ends and shoulders
  • Positioned locating features
Best for: short features with controlled axial position

Flame-Formed Transitions

Localized heating creates tapers, reduced sections and transitions between round and non-round areas without a sharp machined shoulder.

  • End tapers
  • Round-to-profile transitions
  • Formed coupling sections
Best for: smooth transitions and later quartz joining

Cutting, Finishing and Inspection

Profiles are cut to length and supplied with cut, ground, fire-finished or polished ends. Cross-section, twist and feature location are checked from the functional datum.

  • 50–1500 mm typical length
  • Local ground or polished faces
  • Profile and orientation inspection
Output: finished profiles ready for fixtures and assemblies

Manufacturing Route Comparison

Manufacturing routeSuitable geometryResult
Continuous redrawingOne repeated cross-section along the full lengthEfficient batch production of D, polygonal, semicircular and grooved profiles
Grinding or machiningShort flats, grooves, notches, steps and end keysPrecisely positioned local features on round or shaped stock
Flame formingTapers, reduced sections and smooth transitionsContinuous glass geometry suitable for joining and thermal use
Combined processContinuous profile plus local functional featuresInstallation-ready component with fewer separate assembly parts

Surface and End Finishing

Profiles can retain their as-drawn surface or receive local grinding and polishing on selected faces. Ground flats provide mechanical location, polished faces create clear optical zones, and cut profiles can receive fire-finished or ground-square ends. Only the functional surfaces need secondary finishing.

How Custom Profiles Simplify Assemblies

A locating flat can replace a separate anti-rotation key. A longitudinal groove can guide a fiber or small tube without an attached channel. A shaped-to-round transition can connect the profile directly to standard quartz tubing or rod. Integrating these features into the quartz geometry reduces part count and maintains a nonmetallic process-contact path.

Applications

Orientation and Keying

D-shaped and polygonal rods provide repeatable angular location in holders and fixtures.

Fiber and Tube Guides

V-grooves, U-grooves and channels position fibers, wires and capillary tubing.

Optical Assemblies

Flat and curved surfaces combine light handling with a mechanical mounting interface.

Custom Quartz Fabrication

Profile blanks provide repeatable starting geometry for later forming, sealing and joining.

Custom Quartz Rod Profiles

Continuous redrawn sections, locally machined features and flame-formed transitions can be combined in one component.
